Hari Prasad Chaurasia
Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia is one of the most respected maestros of Indian Music.He is one of the most lovable musicians of our times, A master of the Bansuri, the North Indian bamboo flute, he has collaborated with all sorts of illustrious musicians from the world of Indian Classical Music and also masters of other styles and instruments. Padma Vibhushan Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia has not only taken the flute to the hitherto uncharted territory but is also a renowned composer, having created unforgettable immortal songs for several hit films. In 1984 he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi (National Academy of Music, Dance, and Drama) award for his outstanding contribution to music. He received two of India’s highest civilian honours, the Padma Bhushan (1992) and the Padma Vibhushan (2000).
Since 1991 until 2009 Hari ji was heading the Indian music department at Codarts, the Rotterdam Conservatory. He also toured all over the world, played with improvisers such as saxophonist Jan Garbarek or guitarist John McLaughlin and regularly received awards. In 2008 during the opening concert of the Amsterdam India Festival, he played in the Great Hall of the Concertgebouw, where he was knighted by Ronald Plasterk in the Order of Orange Nassau.
